From the intersection of I-40 and I-25 go east on I-40 to Tramway and exit to the right.  At the light, go left.  You will now be heading east on old US 66.  You can still see remnants of some of the old buildings and motels along here.  You will go east approximately fifteen miles to Tijeras and start looking for the NM 14 signs.  You will also see signs directing you to Sandia Crest. It is a short haul to the intersection of NM 14 and NM 536, through the village of Cedar Crest. There are plenty of coffee shops and restaurants around here many frequented by moto-types.  West on NM 536, and you are on "The Crest Road"!  You can take your time and enjoy the sights, or work the “chicken strips” off of your tires.

You will be over two miles above sea level at this lookout.

From here, head back down and you can either go back the same way, or go a few miles down the mountain and look for NM 165 to the left.  This is a fairly easy dual sport ride - mostly dirt around the north end of the Sandia Mountains and through Las Huertas Canyon.  I have seen street bikes here.  This will take you to the town of Placitas where you can easily get back to Albuquerque either through Bernalillo and the river valley on NM 313, or on I-25 south.  Want to see dirt track racing? From the intersection of NM 165 and I-25,  get on I-25 north  (or NM 313 north in Bernalillo 1 mile further west) for the short 10 mile ride to Hollywood Hills, the host of the dirt track events!

This is about a two-hour ride whichever way you decide to go.

Here is a  basic map of the route.
